Fishing season looks good

FINGER LAKES—Fishing season starts April 1, and the Department of Environmental Conservation has done its annual survey of the trout population in some popular area fishing spots.
Brad Hammers, DEC fish biologist, said they sampled 31 rainbow trout at Cold Brook in Hammondsport, Friday, March 26. The largest was 6.9 lbs. He said most of the fish seemed to be more towards Pleasant Valley, but were spread throughout the waters.
“It was the best down there we’ve seen in five years or so,” said Hammers.
The DEC was also at Catharine Creek, March 18 and 19. Hammers said they found 67 rainbow trout spread throughout Catharine, from Montour Falls to Pine City.
However, he said the waters were warmer, so some fish may have already spawned and returned to the lake. Hammers said of the 67 fish sampled, they only found one female that spawned.
The DEC lists western New York as one of the best early season fishing locations, because it tends to warm up earlier than other sections of the state.  The state also advises that the best fly fishing will take place once the waters have warmed up to at least 50 degrees.
Anglers 16 years old and older must have a New York State fishing license. Licenses are available online at http://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6101.html, by calling 1-86-NY-DECALS, or by purchasing one from town and county clerks. To help people locate the most convenient license issuing agent, a new feature has been added to the DEC Web site that includes the location of all active license issuing agents: www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6101.html.
To prevent the spread of invasive specials, anglers are reminded to be sure to disinfect their fishing equipment, including waders and boots before entering a new body of water. This is the only way to prevent the spread of potentially damaging invasive plant and animal species and fish diseases such as didymo, zebra mussels, didymo, VHS and whirling disease.
Early-season hot spots, along with suggestions of where anglers may find opportunities to fish for wild trout can be found in the 2010 Coldwater Fishing Forecast at http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/63598.html. Stream anglers are also reminded that maps of most of the agency’s public fishing rights holdings are posted on the DEC Web site and can be downloaded at www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/9924.html.
