WATKINS GLEN--The Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce will launch a new monthly event series Friday, Aug. 7 that will take place on the first Friday of every month. From 5 to 8 p.m. in downtown Watkins Glen, the "Friday on Franklin" series will feature wine and craft beverage tastings, and food samples in local shops along Franklin Street.
"Friday on Franklin should be a good way to tie the shops on Franklin Street into the wineries on the wine trail," said Christine McAfee of Chateau LaFayette Reneau Winery. "This is a combination of teamwork between the wineries and the shops on Franklin Street."
McAfee said Chateau LaFayette Reneau Winery in particular wanted to join the event as a way to become closer to the Watkins Glen community. She said the winery will be participating in the event once a month as different wineries and stores rotate in each Friday. McAfee said she hopes the event is a success and grows to the scale of similar events in other towns.
"Towns such as Canandaigua have similar events to this," McAfee said. "So does Geneva. Those events seem to be quite successful. I am hoping Friday on Franklin will grow to be just as successful as the similar events in other Finger Lakes towns."
Each month seven different businesses will be chosen to serve as event hosts. The event hosts will be paired with a local winery, craft beverage producer, or food vendor who will be set up inside of their business offering samples. Event attendees will purchase a glass for $10 at the visitor center (214 North Franklin St.). The glass is the ticket to the event.
Attendees will also receive a list of which businesses, wineries, and breweries are participating. Participating event stops will also be marked by a white balloon outside of their entrance. After purchasing their glasses, event attendees will then filter up and down Franklin Street from First Street to 11th Street and a block or two east/west sampling wine and beer, local food products, along with shopping and dining downtown.
Friday on Franklin is organized by the Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Chemung Canal Trust Company. For more, visit http://www.watkinsglenchamber.com/franklin.
