Garrett Winery project will start before it snows

PENN YAN—Renovations of the former Garrett Winery building in Penn Yan will begin before the snow flies.
Steve Griffin, executive director of the Finger Lakes Economic Development Center, said as off the final approval given Wednesday, Nov. 17, the developers can start work at any time.
He said the plan is begin with placing new windows on the first floor before the winter stops construction work. Griffin said the windows will be like those currently on the second floor. Griffin said depending on how long that takes, VinRosa Builders Inc. may also do roof work as well.
The project is part of a $2.5 million Restore N.Y. grant. Griffin said of that the former Garrett Winery building gets $250,000. He added it was all one project with two warehouses also located on Water Street. However, the winery project was ready before the other two. The FLEDC got permission from the state to start it separately.
“This will aesthetically show progress,” said Griffin. “People have heard about development for some time.”
He explained after the exterior renovations, inside construction will be to prepare the building for mixed use. Griffin said the building will be used for retail, office, and commercial space. He added one goal is to get a restaurant on the top floor.
Griffin added the state gave permission last Thursday for the the two warehouses on Water Street to begin work as well. He said the developer could start now.
