Gas service being restored for 580 in Wayne area

WAYNE--Natural gas service for homeowners in the town of Wayne-area was interrupted Monday, Jan. 21.
Tim Marshall, executive director for Steuben County Office of Emergency Services, said due to the disruption in service from a supplier, for safety reasons NYSEG discontinued gas service to 580 Wayne-area customers.
NYSEG provided a statement, Tuesday, Jan. 22 saying, "As of 4:00 p.m., crews have confirmed restoration of 321 of 580 active accounts. NYSEG anticipates having service restored to all of the impacted homes with active service accessible by company personnel by tonight. There are approximately 192 gas accounts that have been visited but company personnel have been unable to access the customer's residence. The company is contacting those customers to arrange for company personnel to restore service."
More than 135 field personnel, including mutual assistance crews from Connecticut Natural Gas, Con Edison, Corning Natural Gas, National Fuel, New Jersey Natural Gas, and Orange and Rockland, have been going from house to house to restore service.
NYSEG telephone agents said the problem started around 12 p.m. Monday. At that time, the outside temperature was 8 degrees. At 4:30 p.m. Monday, NYSEG telephone contacts said the process to re-light pilot lights in all of the affected homes would take some 18-24 hours.
At the request of Steuben County Emergency Services, the American Red Cross has opened a warming center at the Hammondsport Fire Station located at 8521 State Route 54.
