Green Grand Prix, Watkins Glen track opens

WATKINS GLEN--Although the weather hasn't yet fully committed to spring, drivers and runners from around the region are preparing for the opening weekend at Watkins Glen International racetrack.
There are three main events at the track from Friday, April 13 through Sunday, April 15. The Green Grand Prix, a showcase of green motoring technology, begins the events Friday, while The Arc Grand Prix Run kicks off the events for Saturday. Paced laps around the racetrack are available throughout the day, Saturday and Sunday.
The Green Grand Prix is a single-day event featuring a fuel-efficiency competition for pre-registered drivers of alternate-fueled vehicles, hybrids and traditional gasoline-powered and diesel-powered vehicles. Individuals, colleges and universities, car clubs and manufacturers prepare vehicles for the event. There is no admission charge for spectators Friday, and the event is open to the public.
The first portion of the event involves the Doris Bovee Memorial Fuel Economy Rally and Prius Challenge at 10 a.m. to noon. The event uses the short course at WGI. During the laps, there will be a presentation about autonomous vehicles in the media center. After lunch, a dragster truck will be giving demos on pit lane. From 1:45 to 4 p.m. an autocross will be held at the south paddock. There will also be additional talks in the tech garage about green technology.

Saturday will begin the official opening of the track with The Arc Grand Prix Run in the morning. Gates will open at 6 a.m. with the opening ceremonies at 7:50 a.m. and an 8 a.m. race time.
Those who have not pre-registered to run can do so at the event for $30. There is also a one-mile pit road course that does not involve racing or timing but allows for short distance walking on the track.
For more about the race or to register, visit www.arcgrandprixrun.org.
The remainder of the weekend will feature paced driving laps of the road course. The laps begin at 10 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. The cost to take your vehicle around the track is $25 and tickets will be available at the gate until 3 p.m. each day. No motorcycles or box trucks will be permitted.
