YATES COUNTY--The Hope Walk of Yates County will be taking place on Saturday, Aug. 27 at the Penn Yan Fireman's Field. The goal of the event is to raise money to help residents who have been diagnosed with cancer. Along with the walk itself, there will also be a carnival, food, silent auctions, raffles, live music and more which will help raise money and bring the community together.
"This will be our eighth year, and it has helped a lot of people," said Ron Miller, president of the Hope Walk. "There is way too much cancer in Yates County and this is a way to help them and people are appreciative to get a check to help them with some of their expenses."
The Fireman's Field will host the event for the first time this year, located behind Knapp and Schlappi Lumber, the location will provide extra facilities and the added ability to provide more food.
Money raised at events throughout the year, including the major fundraiser the Hope Walk, allows for the group to provide grants of up to $1,000 and other support.
"Our goal this year is to raise $40,000, we have about $30,000, we will see how Saturday goes," Miller said.
The event will run from 3 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. The opening ceremony is a 4 p.m., the survivors ceremony is at 6 p.m., with Olympic games at 7 p.m. and the Hope bag lighting ceremony at 9 p.m.
"It's a great way to show people that there is hope, that it's about treatment and preventative measures," Miller added.
There will also be a number of Penn Yan-Dundee football players on hand volunteering their time for the children's rides.
"The carnival will be great for kids, and survivors and caregivers get a free dinner," said Miller.
