PENN YAN--Legislators met Monday, June 11 and passed a number of resolutions.
Some of the key decisions included the following:
• Authorized the Sheriff to fill the position of Deputy Sheriff. This is a current vacancy due to a retirement effective in May. The net cost to the county was projected to be $76,000 including retirement and fringe benefits.
• The sheriff may also create and fill a full time correction officer/court security position. This post is not to exceed $83,900.15 including wages and fringe benefits. The resolution states there will be no cost to Yates County for this state-funded position.
• Appropriated $1,000,000 from the county unassigned general fund balance toward any possible future building needs to the building improvement and construction capital project fund.
• $500,000 was transferred from an unassigned fund balance to be used for "budget stabilization" to make provisions for possible adverse financial situations that may arise. This allows the county to maintain stable property tax rates for residents.
• Legislators also honored county resident Eleanor Parker. The resolution stated, "Parker has selflessly given over 50 years of volunteer service to the Yates County community."
Parker has volunteered her time and service to diverse community causes including, but not limited to, the Pro Action Yates Office for the Aging Advisory Council, as well as the Hope Center/Keuka Food Pantry, the First Baptist Church of Penn Yan--Backpack Program, the Living Well, the Women's Auxiliary of the Benton Volunteer Fire Department and Yates County Election Board. Parker has been recognized, for all her efforts, by the New York State Office for the Aging as one of the state's 2018 Older New Yorker's Day honorees.
