Memorial Day honors the fallen soldiers

TRI-COUNTY AREA—Throughout U.S. history, men and women have given their lives to protect our freedoms.  Those sacrifices are remembered on Memorial Day, which this year was Monday, May 28. Throughout the area, communities held events in memory of the service members who died. Some people had previously visited cemeteries to place flags on the graves of former members of the armed forces.  Memorial Day has a long tradition, that nearby Waterloo, N.Y. claims as the origin of the national holiday. It was also previously known as Decoration Day.
