Montour bridge work will be done in October

MONTOUR FALLS—The drive between Odessa and Montour Falls may take a few extra minutes if you use the Route 224 bridge over Catharine Creek.
Traffic on the bridge in Montour Falls is closed down to one lane of traffic while the New York State Department of Transportation repairs it. Ron Majeski, engineer in charge of the project, explained the work started in mid-March, when the bridge went to one lane. Workers have torn out the deck on the closed, eastbound side.
The project is one of many funded by America Recovery and Reinvestment Act stimulus funds. It was awarded a total of $1,795,935. The contract was awarded to CP Ward Inc., Dec. 30, 2009. According to the ARRA Web site, was $187,949.47 spent already.
He said phase one of the work is currently underway. Majeski explained phase 2 would start in mid-July, with the closing of the westbound lane. By then, the other lane would be completed and open to traffic. Majeski added there would still be a pedestrian walk open during that phase.
He said phase 2 should be finished in September. The final completion date is expected to be in late October. Majeski said the proposed end date was Dec. 1, 2010, but work will be done before that.
Currently, workers are preparing to pour the new concrete deck on the eastbound lane. Majeski said the old concrete was torn up. The same will be done to the other lane in phase 2. He added other work would include repairs to each end of the bridge, and bearings replaced. The bridge will also have a concrete barrier on the sides as opposed to steel.
