Montour Falls seeks building proposals

MONTOUR FALLS—Montour Falls was awarded $465,000 in funding from the Main Street Grant for work on West Main Street.
Only 16 of 80 grant applications were approved by the Division of Housing and Community Renewal. The village of Montour Falls, with help from the Schuyler County partnership for Economic Development (SCOPED), applied for the $465,000 in November of 2008. This is the second award made to Schuyler County, the first being to Watkins Glen om 2006 for development on Franklin Street.
“The village of Montour Falls has been fortunate to be awarded these financial opportunities. This is one more benefit that has come our way to help revitalize Montour Falls,” said Mayor Donna Kelley.
The grant received will assist with renovation of the first floor commercial/civic space, residential renovation and streetscape improvements on West Main Street. This will include part of the “Glorious T” Historic District (on the State and federal Registers of Historic Places) and the adjoining West Main Street commercial district. The intention of the grant is to make historically appropriate improvements to building facades and interiors, with an emphasis on second floor residential units.
Now that the $465,000 has been awarded, the process will begin to accept proposals from local businesses and organizations that wish to make renovations that fall into these categories. The grant funds must be matched by the applicants by one dollar for every three dollars of grant money and must comply with both local zoning and state historic preservation guidelines. Further information about the grant can be obtained by contacting the SCOPED office at 607-535-4341.
