Odessa-Montour school board 09/10/09

Meeting:  The Odessa-Montour school board met Thursday, Sept. 10 for 45 minutes.
Attendance:  All board members were present.  There were 12 members of the public in the audience.
Action:  The board approved a bond resolution for the future purchase of new buses.
Discussion without action:  At the start of the meeting Greg Conlon, new middle and high school principal, presented three students for August graduation.
• Conlon also presented his administrator’s report.  He said the middle and high school had a smooth opening.  Conlon added that over the next two weeks he would have class meetings.
• Chris Williams, new Hanlon Elementary principal, reported the school held its first third grade orientation.  She said around 100 people attended and that is was something that would continue in the future.
• Sandy Young, special education, reported on what the staff had been doing over the summer.  She said that a number of staff participated in programs and curriculum development over the summer.  Teachers doing one of the programs, centered on math, each got $500 to fund the projects.  She explained that program had 19 participants from Kindergarten to sixth grade.
• Board member Scott Westervelt had questions about gym classes now being co-ed.  He said he was concerned that students in the locker rooms will not be as supervised as well.  Superintendent Jim Frame said he would provide board members with information on the gym classes and number of students.
• Westervelt also asked about the status of the modified swimming team.  Frame said the school is looking at the options to allow them to continue to play.
Upcoming meetings:  The next regular board meeting will be Thursday, Oct. 8.  It is expected to start at 7 p.m., following an executive session at 6 p.m.
