Penn Yan school board 11/16/11

    Meeting: The Penn Yan Central School District board of education met for approximately 40 minutes on Wednesday, Nov. 16.
    Attendance: Board member Loni Terpolilli was absent. There were two members of the public in the audience.
    Action: Policy changes for Solicitation of charitable donations from school children and fundraising by students were approved.
    Discussion without action: Penn Yan middle school members of the cast of Annie Jr. presented two songs from the play for the board.
    • Superintendent of Schools David Hamilton said Academic Excellence Day at the Academy is the first he had attended. Hamilton said, “It really elevates the role of academics.”
    • Special Education teacher Kathy Gagne spoke to the board about activities in the middle school.
    • Building principals gave reports. Middle school Principal Rebecca Perrault said cast members of Annie will present a “teaser” during StarShine on Friday, Dec. 2. Induction for National Junior Honor Society will be on Dec. 16. Masterminds are challenging students from Dundee Central School.
    • High school Principal David Pullen reported that students received recognition at Academic Excellence Day. More than 30 veterans attended the Veterans Day program. Pullen said the Helping Everyone Help Others (HERO) program could go nationwide.
    • Elementary Principal Marcie Ware told the board the first Duffy book give away was Nov. 17. Each student received a book. The school wide community service project will collect food and money for Milly’s Pantry. Milly Bloomquist will be invited to the school for a presentation of the results in December.
    • Following acceptance of donations, Board Vice-President Ryan Hallings commended the continued support from the community and staff.
    Appointments/resignations: Jeremy Mikels was appointed to the position of technology teacher, effective Nov. 14. Total salary is $41,401 (pro-rated).
    • Faculty member Brett Harrison was named Teacher on Special Assignment for the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) Grant Project. Appointment is pending approval by the Carol M. White PEP office.  Service will commence Nov. 17.
    Upcoming meetings: A joint meeting with the boards of education of Dundee and Marcus Whitman Central School Districts will be at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 13. The meeting will be in the Penn Yan elementary cafeteria. The purpose of the meeting is to receive the Shared Services Study Report from Western New York Study Council.
