Penn Yan school board 2/3/11

Meeting: The Penn Yan Central School District board of education met for approximately one hour Thursday, Feb. 3.
Attendance: Board member Mike VanWormer was absent. Board member Nancy Scher was excused. Eleven members of the public were in the audience.
Action: Approved realignment of two administrative positions and assignments. Change of assignment of Marcie Ware from Elementary School Assistant Principal to Elementary Principal at a salary of $85,000.
• Approved elimination of Middle School Assistant Principal and reassignment of Warren Kinsey to Elementary School Assistant Principal.
• Accepted assignment of purchase contract for the Branchport School from the Finger Lakes Visitors Association to the Finger Lakes Cultural and Natural History Museum.
Discussion without action: Assistant Superintendent for Business Doug Tomandl presented the first review of expenditures in preparation for the 2011-12 school budget. Tomandl Although many line items will be the same, salaries, benefits and retirement fixed costs will result in a shortfall or more than $3 million.
• Ware presented information on the Duffy Books Program. Ware said the program stresses the importance of children having books to read.  The first part of the local program was a drive for gently used books. She said close to 3,000 to 4,000 books were collected by the end of the year. Children select books to take home and keep.  One of the program requirements is that the students help raise half of the money needed for the program. She called the program, “A huge success.”
Appointments/resignations: Four faculty resignations for the purpose of retirement were accepted. They are:
• Physical Education teacher John Manley. Manley began at PYCSD in 1973.
• Home & Careers teacher Sandy Birmingham. Birmingham began at PYCSD in 1975.
• School Psychologist Raymond Barone. Barone began with the district in 1980.
• English teacher Margaret White. White began with the district in 1997.
• Bus driver Joyce Simons resigned for the purpose of retirement, effective June 30. Simons began with PYCSD in 1971.
• Custodian Eric Shriver, also for the purpose of retirement, effective March 18. Shriver began at PYCSD in 1998.
• Thomas Lightfoote was appointed computer technician, effective Feb. 11.
• Computer technician Adam Monell was terminated, effective Jan. 13.
Upcoming meetings: Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. in the elementary school cafeteria.
