Planning approves parking, zoning and Airsoft

PENN YAN—The three referrals reviewed by the Yates County Planning Board during a meeting Thursday, Feb. 24 covered a wide range of land use issues.
Penn Yan Hospitality Group, which does business as Best Western in Penn Yan came to the board with requests for Area Variances for parking and setback related to the addition on the Lake Street property. Planners were told that parking lot use varies. The two businesses on the property have need for parking at different times of day. The area variances were approved. Referrals to the county planning board are returned to the municipality of origination following their consideration of the referral.
The second referral was a massive body of work that the town of Starkey referred to the county. The town zoning board completed work on changes to the town zoning code. Zoning board members met in special session for two years and another two years to refine the document. Yates County Planner Shawna Bonshak outlined some concerns that had been offered by Yates County Soil and Water Conservation District. The zoning code was approved by the county board.
An application for a special use permit for a 50 acre site in Benton to be used for Airsoft events was approved following discussion. Airsoft is somewhat similar to paintball. In Airsoft small pellets are used. The speed is much lower than that of real bullets. Protective gear is used.
The county planning board annual report will be presented to Yates County Legislature at their March 14 meeting.
