Porch is hanging over Jacob's Brook

PENN YAN-A porch on the east side of a home at 112 Clinton St. near Main Street in the village has been hanging over Jacob’s Brook since June 11. Occupants were ordered out of the property after the collapse, which happened around midnight.
Assistant Director of Public Works Richard Osgood said the wall that was under the porch was compromised some time in the past and the rain last Thursday was, “The straw that broke the camel’s back and the wall fell over. Thank God no one was hurt.” The house was probably built around the 1920s, according to Osgood and, from an engineering standpoint the wall was not constructed well.
Inspection of the wall on the east side of the house after the collapse showed the wall had bowed between three quarters and one and a quarter inches and there was a smell of natural gas in the basement. Gas, water and electricity have been shut off.
Osgood said he doesn’t know what the next step would be, but he understands the village is trying to work with the owner of the property.
