Route 54A will get $1M for culvert work

URBANA, PULTENEY—A total of $1 million in federal stimulus money has been awarded to Urbana and Pulteney for the rehabilitation of 54 culverts on Route 54A.
Department of Transportation Spokeswoman Carol Breen said the culverts, through which water passes under roads, go from Hammondsport to just south of Branchport. She said 13 of the culverts have a diameter of five feet or more and the 41 rest being smaller than that. Breen explained bids for the project will be sought starting June 21. She said projects selected for this stimulus funding need to be done within three years. However, a press release from Gov. David Paterson’s office said the culvert rehabilitation is expected to be completed by the end of 2009. Breen said work could begin in August.
“There is a range of repair work planned at these sites, with the primary focus being timely rehabilitation aimed at extending the useful life of these structures,” said Breen. She also said that the work planned would not require the closing of lanes or detours. In fact, in most areas people may not even know rehabilitation is being done.
She said the work includes paving the bottom of culverts to reinforce them, relining the insides with plastic or aluminum, and partial replacement of culvert openings.
According to Paterson’s press release, the culvert project is part of at least $89 million in transportation and infrastructure funding in the Southern Tier. This funding, through the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), will go toward much-needed highway and road repair, bridge span work and other long-term improvements to the region’s infrastructure and will create an estimated 2,136 jobs.
