Runners, walkers raise awarenss of cancer

WATKINS GLEN—On a bright, sunny day, almost 500 runners and walkers participated in the Live Like Liz 5K Walk/Run, Sunday, June 5.
Walkers and runners followed part of the Catharine Valley Trail, but started and finished at the Watkins Glen high school track. People in the bleachers were encouraged to cheer on each person as they finished, telling them to not give up and “live like Liz!”
Elizabeth Amisano was born into a large and loving family from Watkins Glen. She is survived by parents Christina (Kelley) and Denis Amisano, older brother DJ and younger sisters Michelle and Margaret Mary (Margie). At the age of 18, while away at her first semester of college, Elizabeth began to feel ill. After several months of persistent symptoms, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
For the next two years Elizabeth underwent four major surgeries and numerous rounds of chemotherapy. She fought a very courageous battle against the disease, but was unable to conquer it. Elizabeth passed away on Oct. 12, 2005, at the age of 20. The mission of the Live Like Liz walk and the Elizabeth Amisano Ovarian Cancer Education Fund is to promote awareness of ovarian cancer through education.
