Schuyler legislator will seek assembly seat

SCHUYLER COUNTY—Schuyler County’s own Legislator Paul Marcellus will be running for Assemblymen Tom O’Mara’s 137th District seat.
Marcellus said he would be resigning from the Schuyler County Legislature this month to campaign full-time.  He added that not only is there the general election Nov. 2, but a primary election for Republican candidates.
Marcellus said he would be facing two other Republicans in the primary; Christopher Friend of Big Flatts and George Richter, Chemung town supervisor.  O’Mara will not be running for reelection, but instead will be seeking George Winner’s state senate seat.
“People feel big government is out of control,” he said, as a reason he is running for a seat in the New York State Assembly.
Marcellus said he is nearing completion of his first full term as a county legislator.  He explained his political career started when he tried, but failed, to get a Watkins Glen village board seat six years ago.  His next foray into politics was opposing doubling the room tax.  He said while that also failed, he was recruited to run for county legislature.
His other job experience comes from owning a business, the Colonial Motel in Watkins Glen, since 1997 and 26 years in law enforcement.  Marcellus said he has “advocated strongly for the viability of the business community.”
One thing Marcellus said he has not thought of, is if he doesn’t make it past the primary election.  He added if he does not make it, he would do fundraising work, and definitely an Appalachian hiking trip in July.  He said it is something his daughter is looking forward to, and something he wants to do even if it means taking a short break from campaigning.
The 137th District covers all of Schuyler and Chemung Counties, and part of Tioga.
