SCT Computers reopens

PENN YAN—Four months ago SCT Computers closed its doors in Penn Yan with the owners saying they would never return.
However, the store has returned to Penn Yan and had its grand reopening Dec. 1. SCT Computers is owned by Bob and Alyssa Wixon, who also have a SCT store in Watkins Glen. The Wixons originally closed the Penn Yan location because of issues over the store’s sign. It did not fit the specifications for the historic district.
Alyssa Wixon said they decided to reopen the Penn Yan store because business kept her husband going through the area a lot. He would have to make two to three trips back to Watkins Glen for parts he did not have with him. With this store reopened, he can also use it as a drop-off point without having to drive farther with deliveries.
She added that people were still very supportive of SCT Computers even after it closed its doors. Customers went to their Watkins Glen location.
“They didn’t stop believing in us,” said Wixon.
The reopened store has a temporary sign up for now while the Wixons wait to get approval for the new sign. It has to go through both the zoning board and the historic preservation board.
Bruce Lyon, Penn Yan code enforcement officer, said the Wixons want their sign to be a little bigger than the current codes allow so applied for a variance in early November.
“It’s pretty common for downtown business,” he said, adding that they are working on getting the code changed so businesses do not need to keep applying for variances.
Lyon said the application time should take about a month.
The Penn Yan SCT Computers is open Monday to Fridays, 9 a.m to 5 p.m.
