Vote will determine swimming pool project

ODESSA--The Odessa-Montour community will have the opportunity to vote on renovations to the swimming pool area at the high school on Monday, Nov. 7. Voting will take place from 1 to 7 p.m. in the Hanlon Elementary School, room 12.
The board of education is seeking authorization to expand the $16.9 million capital project that was approved in 2019 to $17.85 million and to use an additional $950,000 from the district's capital reserve fund in order to complete all necessary work on the pool. This project would have no impact on taxes, as the money would come from existing capital reserve funds, which can only be used to improve district facilities.
The scope of the project would include a complete renovation of the 1964 pool shell, new ceiling, new tiles, all new plumbing and a new scoreboard and record board.
The pool is typically used each day during the school year to provide swimming lessons and skill development to students in grades 3 to 12. It also is used for summer programming, trainings and by outside agencies. College-level lifeguarding classes also have been offered in the past.
The pool is unusable in its current state and will remain closed for the foreseeable future. It has been drained due to a leak in a water line and the equipment used to run the pool is beyond its useful life.
