PENN YAN--Those who walk along a portion of the Keuka Outlet Trail June 2 will have opportunities to make a paper turtle, hear a special story, paint rocks, learn about stream sampling and water quality, hear local history along the outlet and more as they help raise money to protect the land and water in the historic Keuka Outlet ravine.
Walk for Water on National Trails Day is a five-mile fun walk through nature and history that begins at the Penn Yan Boat Launch about 9 a.m. and concludes at the Cascade Mill site with a picnic, lawn games and activities starting about 12:30 p.m.
The event supports the work of the Friends of the Outlet, Penn Yan Rotary and HTS Congo.
The Keuka Outlet Trail is a popular trail used by hikers, strollers, bicyclists and horseback riders. The trail is owned by an all volunteer non-profit organization, the Friends of the Outlet.
Two other organizations whose missions protect clean water or increase access to it will also benefit:
• Rotary: In their quest for service above self, Penn Yan Rotary serves the local community and also tends to urgent needs far abroad. Rotary International's mission integrates water, sanitation and hygiene into education projects for children.
• HTSCongo: works to provide clean drinking water near homes in remote villages and sanitation facilities to schools, hospitals and clinics in the third world. Director Leon Fontier of Penn Yan has been in DR Congo since February, installing wells and sanitary systems in several villages.
Registered walkers will receive a passport that will be marked for each station visited along the walk. Those whose passport is stamped by at least four of the interactive stations will be admitted to the Cascade Mill site picnic at no charge.
A donation can also be made for admission to the picnic.
Participants who don't want to walk back to Penn Yan can park a car at Cascade Mills in the morning, or use the shuttle provided by Keuka Taxi to return to Penn Yan after the picnic.
