Watkins gets $2,500 for science fair

WATKINS GLEN—The Watkins Glen Central School District received a $2,500 grant from the Corning Incorporated Foundation to support the district’s first science fair. The fair will be held for students in grades kindergarten through eighth on March 19 in the Elementary School cafeteria.
The event was initiated to allow students to research science projects based on their own interests. Projects will demonstrate students’ research skills, as well as their ability to apply information to real-world problems.
According to a grant application provided to the Foundation, students recently received an informational packet giving ideas, rules, advice guidelines and tips for preparing projects. All proposals will be reviewed to ensure safety. Two after-school mentoring sessions will be held in February and March to help students develop their projects.
Educators in the district hope the science fair becomes an annual event that is supported by the community.
The fair will be open to the public between 10 and 11 a.m. and students will speak with evaluators at 11:30 a.m. Judging will take place during the afternoon.
