Watkins Glen school board 01/19/10

Meeting:  The Watkins Glen school board met Tuesday, Jan. 19 for an hour and a half.
Attendance:  Tom Richardson was the only board member absent.  There were no members of the public in the audience.
Action:  Board member Joe Fazzary will vote for the Watkins Glen district at the Mid-Winter School Board Association dinner, Feb. 11.  Superintendent Tom Phillips explained that even after the GST BOCES merger, there were still two separate school board associations.  He said the two associations will dissolve and form one covering all 21 schools in GST BOCES.
Discussion without action:  The board heard a report from Nancy Blake, executive director of Career Development Council, and Tess Pollack, career specialist assigned to Watkins Glen.  Blake said Watkins is the school other districts look to on how to get the most out of the career development council program.
• High school Principal Dave Warren gave an update on the meetings he is having about a cell phone policy.  He said he is getting a myriad of reactions from students and adults on cell phones in school.  Warren said one concern brought to his attention is that regardless of when cell phones are used, students could still get unfiltered Internet access on phones.
• Mike DeNardo, maintenance and operations, told the board that he is working with Hunt Engineers on the alternative energy grant.
Appointments/resignations:  The board approved DuWayne Austic as chaperone.
• The board also approved the resignation of Lindsy Hyer as speech pathologist.
Upcoming meetings:  The next regular board meeting is Monday, Feb. 1 at 6:45 p.m.
