Meeting:  The Watkins Glen school board met Monday, March 1 for 25 minutes.
Attendance:  Gloria Brubaker was the only board member absent.  There were no members of the public in the audience.
Action:  The school board extended Superintendent Tom Phillips’ contract by one year, now until June 30, 2015.  Board President Brian O’Donnell said this came about after an extensive evaluation process where every board member gave Phillips positive evaluations.
• School items were declared surplus and approved for sale.  Mike DeNardo, buildings manager, said the supplies are no longer needed or are past their usefulness.  He explained the items will be sold online via Auctions International.
• The board approved an agreement with Schuyler County for a shared fuel facility.
• The 2009-10 internal audit risk assessment was accepted.  The board also chose purchasing and expenditures as the focus of the next audit.
Discussion without action:  Phillips gave a report on the mobile learning devices.  He said other schools will be visiting the middle school to see the cell phones used in the classroom.  He added he would be doing a webinar for another state’s education conference, from his office, about the mobile learning devices.
• Board member Robert Dill gave a report on the budget committee.  He said everything is up in the air, even though Gov. David Paterson announced state aid would be restored.  He added Paterson not running for reelection could mean this changes in the future.
• O’Donnell said that in November, the Watkins Glen Faculty Association donated close to $250 to assist students and families that had unpaid lunch bills.
• Clerk Sharon Clark said two board seats would come up for vote May 18; O’Donnell’s and Joe Fazzary’s.
Appointments/resignations:  The board accepted the resignation of Travis Durfee as varsity boys track coach.
• Charles Lockwood was approved as cleaner, and Abigail Tormey was approved as assistant boys/girls track coach.
• The board granted tenure to the following: Nan Woodworth-Shaw, school administrator; Elizabeth Hartnett, mathematics; Stephen McFarland, elementary; Justin Mucitelli, physical education; Jessica Purpura, elementary; and Cathy Mangus, teaching assistant.
Upcoming meetings:  The board will hold a workshop meeting, Monday, March 15 at 5:45 p.m.  The next regular board meeting is Monday, April 5.  It is anticipated the regular session will begin at 6:30 p.m.
