Meeting:
The Watkins Glen school board met Monday, March 2 for 40 minutes.
Attendance:  All board members were present.  There were eight members of the public in the audience.
Action:  The board approved seven recommendations for tenure.  The teaching positions ranged from Spanish, health education and teacher’s assistants.
• A $50 donation was accepted for the elementary school library.
• The board approved the clerical association contract.
Discussion without action:  The Watkins Glen student council presented some issues and concerns the seniors had, including not being to access e-mails from school computers when they needed to contact colleges, the school day hours and the possibility of having a class to help seniors meet college application deadlines.  Superintendent Thomas Phillips commented on all three.  For the school hours he said it was something they had to determine to meet the needs of BOCES and minimizing the loss of school time for trips.  He said they are looking into making a small number of computers that would be monitored accessible to the Internet.  Phillips added that they were also looking at a mandatory First Year Experience course for second semester juniors/first semester seniors.
• The board was invited to attend the Watkins Glen Central School Music department concert, Tuesday, March 10 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.
• The board announced that a book about the history of the district was being published.  The book is called “Watkins Glen Central School District, A History: 1853-2008” and costs $16; the amount it costs to print the book.  There will only be one printing and pre-orders must be in my March 23.  Checks, made payable to the WGHS Student Council, can be sent to: Watkins Glen High School, Student Council - History Book, 301 12th Street, Watkins Glen, N.Y. 14891.
Bids/purchases over $1,000:  None.
Appointments/resignations:  None.
Upcoming meetings:  The next regular board meeting is Monday, April 6, beginning at approximately 6:30 p.m., following an executive session.  The next workshop is Monday, March 16 at 5:45 p.m.
