Meeting:  The Watkins Glen school board met Tuesday, May 4.
Attendance:  All board members were present.  There were two members of the public in the audience.
Action: The board approved a number of items as surplus and also approved them for resale or disposal.
• The 2010-11 school calendar was approved.
• The board acknowledged the warrants, as approved by Marian Boyce, claims auditor.
• The first reading on the wellness policy was awknowleded.
Discussion without action:  The board held a public hearing for the school budget.  The only comments from the public were from Boyce, saying it is not always easy letting employees go and thanked the board for its effort.  District treasurer Gayle Sedlack reviewed the expenditure portion of the budget while Superintendent Tom Phillips covered the staff reductions.
• Phillips gave the school board a detailed summary of the 2009 School Report Card for Watkins.
• Phillips also told the board about his Mobile Learning Device Webinar presentation he gave recently, as part of the Nebraska State Education Conference.
• The board viewed photos from the Kid’s Night Out at the high school that attracted over 100 elementary students.  It was organized by Breanna Voon and Emily Cross, Ithaca College students, who also donated $645 to the Food Bank.
• Board President Brian O’Donnell spoke on the recent passing of Ruth Wilson, mother of Marylyn Cross.  She was the youngest to graduate from Watkins Glen, in 1941, at the age of 14.
Appointments/resignations:  The board accepted the resignation of Robert Hill, food service helper.
Upcoming meetings:  The next regular board meeting is Monday, June 7.  It is expected to start at 6:30 p.m., following an executive session beginning at 5:45 p.m.  A workshop meeting will also be held Monday, May 17, starting at 5:45 p.m.
