Meeting:  The Watkins Glen School Board met Monday, Oct. 5, for 20 minutes.
Attendance:  All Board members were present.  There were no members of the public in the audience.
Action:  The school board approved the creation of a school nurse position.  Superintendent Tom Phillips explained that all the Watkins schools are now covered.  He said that previously, the elementary nurse was also filling in as an administrative role.
• The board also approved the State Education Department’s Universal Pre-K Agreement with Head Start.  Phillips said it is for UPK services with a cooperative community partner the school chose.
• The board agreed to support the N.Y. State School Boards Association’s proposed 10 resolutions sent out to school districts.
Discussion without action:  Phillips spoke to the board about the Watkins middle school applying for the status of Essential Elements Schools to Watch.  He explained it is a top distinction to get, with only 12 schools in the state having it currently.  He said a team would be coming for three days to review the middle school.  Phillips added even if the school does not get the status, they would know where to make improvements after the review.
• Phillips brought the GST BOCES Special Education Space Plan to the board’s attention.
Upcoming meetings:  The next regular board meeting will be Monday, Nov. 2 at approximately 6:30 p.m.  It will start after a 5:30 p.m. executive session.  A workshop meeting will be held Monday, Oct. 19 at 5:30 p.m.
