Watkins Glen school board 11/02/09

Meeting:  The Watkins Glen school board met Monday, Nov. 2 for 45 minutes.
Attendance:  Board members Gloria Brubaker and Joe Fazzary were absent.  There were six members of the public in the audience.
Action:  The board approved the 2010-11 budget calendar.  Superintendent Tom Phillips said the schedule could be changed if something big passes on the state level.  However, he explained the school board needs to start working on the budget.
Discussion without action:  Phillips spoke about the changes the Watkins high school would go through as it transitions to more of an academy organization.  He said in the academy setting students would still take core classes, but electives would focus on interests.  He added the freshmen academy team wants to teach only freshmen and have a schedule outside of the high school one.
• Phillips reported that as of Dec. 1, fifth and seventh grade students would start using the GoKnow cell phones in class.  He said teacher training is ongoing.
• Jenna Swarthout, student council president, spoke briefly to the board.  The rest of the student council also introduced themselves.  Swarthout said one of the focuses this year for the student council would be the lunch schedule.
• Phillips also said the Middle School Association Conference held Oct. 22 to 24 was a success.  He added he was approached to host the conference at Watkins Glen again in the future.
Upcoming meetings:  The next regular board meeting will be Monday, Dec. 7 at 5:45 p.m.  It is anticipated that the regular session will begin at approximately 6:30 p.m.  There will be a workshop meeting Monday, Nov. 16 at 5:45 p.m.
