Watkins Glen school board 11/16/09

Meeting:  The Watkins Glen school board met Monday, Nov. 16 for one and a half hours.
Attendance:  All board members were present.  There were no members of the public in the audience.
Discussion without action:  The board discussed the use of cell phones during the school day.  Superintendent Tom Phillips said be brought it up because he thought the policy is vague.  Board members Gloria Brubaker and Robert Dill said cell phones  should not be allowed in class because it is disruptive.  Clerk Sharon Clark will see if New York School Board Association has a sample policy on cell phones.
• Cyndy Wood, pool facilities coordinator, asked the board to approve an ACE Water Safety Instructor’s Program class.  She said students are interested.  It would be held after school, Mondays and Wednesdays, from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m.  Wood said for students the course would only cost about $50, which would be for books.  She explained that if the course were taken elsewhere, it could cost between $250 and $350.  Phillips said the board would vote on it at the next business meeting.  He added it would be a minimal cost to the school because they already have the pool.
Upcoming meetings:  The next regular board meeting will be Monday, Dec. 7.  It is expected to start at 6:30 p.m., following an executive session starting at 5:45 p.m.
