Watkins Glen school board 12/7/09

Meeting:  The Watkins Glen School Board met Monday, Dec. 7 for 30 minutes.
Attendance:  All board members were present.  There were four members of the public in the audience.
Action:  The board approved creation of a Water Safety Instructor ACE Course.
• The board approved a donation from Wal-Mart of 52 books and leftover Halloween decorations to the Elementary school.
Discussion without action:  Board member Brian O’Donnell brought up use of the indoor track by community members before school and after practice in the afternoon.  Athletic Director Denise Wickham explained it is open to the community in the morning before school and 5 to 9 p.m.
• The Student Council presented to the board, including ideas about cell phone use during school hours.  They suggested that cell phones could be used during lunch.  Board member Robert Dill said he agreed and that “lunch time is your time.”
• Superintendent Tom Phillips said the committee from the “New York Schools to Watch” program would be at Watkins, Dec. 15.
• Phillips also said there would be an article in the New York State Middle School associaion’s newsletter about Watkins and the mobile learning devices.
Upcoming meetings:  There will be a workshop meeting, Monday Dec. 21 at 5:45 p.m.  The next regular board meeting will Monday, Jan. 4.  It is anticipated to start at 6:30 p.m.
