Watkins Glen school board 7/7/10

Meeting:  The Watkins Glen school board met Wednesday, July 7.
Attendance:  All board members were present.  There were no members of the public in the audience.
Action:  The board appointed Joe Fazzary to the GST Regional School Boards Association executive committee.  Fazzary is currently serving as the president, as the SCT-SA transitions into the GST BOCES.
• The board approved creation of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America Club for middle school students, starting with the 2010-11 school year.
• The renewal agreement with DeGroot Management Services for 2010-11 was approved.  The agreement covers consultation services related to unemployment claims.
• The board approved an agreement with the ARC of Schuyler County for the student work study program.
• The board also acknowledged the annual review of the following policies: investments, attendance, and code of conduct.
Discussion without action:  Superintendent Tom Phillips said he is working with the high school guidance office to track student data from seventh to 12th grade.  He said the data would be used to see if the increase in student achievement is a result of recent program enhancements.
• Phillips added that the 2010-11 school calendar will highlight student photography of local landmarks.
Appointments/resignations:  At the start of the meeting Brian O’Donnell and Michael Myers were elected board president and vice-president respectively.
• Mary Mack was appointed as a special education teacher, and Beth Hogan was appointed as a math teacher.
• The following resignations were approved: Jack Telech from math for retirement, Jolene Miller from teaching assistant for retirement, and Susan Kirton as fifth grade team leader.
• The board approved the following coaching appointments: Michael Johnston Sr. as varsity football coach, Claude Treusdell and Michael Stephens as assistant football coaches, Louis Condon Jr. as modified football coach, Brian Gardner as modified girls soccer coach, and Ralph Diliberto as volunteer strength trainer.
Upcoming meetings:  The next regular meeting will be Monday, Aug. 2 at 6:30 p.m.
