Watkins Glen school board 9/6/11

Meeting:  The Watkins Glen Central School District board of education met Tuesday, Sept. 6, for 40 minutes.
Attendance:  All board members were present.  There were no members of the public in the audience.
Action:  The school board approved the Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR) plan.  The plan changes how school districts review and evaluate teacher performances.
    • An agreement for the Mandarin Chinese class consultant was approved for the 2011-12 school year.
    • The 2010-11 audit report was approved.  Superintendent Tom Phillips said there were no material deficiencies reported.  He added the auditors commented on the high quality of accounting and internal controls.
Discussion without action:  Phillips reported there was a $2 million reduction in assessments on the 2011 tax role.  This reduction primarily reflects a lowering of assessments for utility companies.
    • Phillips said opening day for staff went well.  He added he met with teachers for grades four to eight in English Language Arts and math to review the new APPR plan.
Appointments/resignations: The board approved the following appointments: Nils Watson as high school disciplinarian, Jessica Purpura as second grade team leader, Nancy Loughlin as high school attendance officer, David Fregly as social studies teacher, Charlene Watson as a teacher aide, Sonja Croft as library clerk, and Kent Thurston as food service helper
Upcoming meeting:  The next Watkins Glen school board meeting will be the annual facilities tour, Monday, Sept. 19.  It starts at the middle school at 5:45 p.m.  The board will end the tour in the high school library.
