Watkins looks at junior varsity cuts

WATKINS GLEN—The Watkins Glen school board talked about sports next year and having only modified and varsity for some teams, during the Monday, May 16, meeting.
Superintendent Phillips said after this year is over the district needs to look at the sports program and which sports don’t need to have a junior varsity team, just modified and varsity. He explained that this year the JV and varsity softball team didn’t have enough players to hold games sometimes.
Phillips said he was in favor of offering as much as possible, but the district needs to be cost effective as well. He explained it’s not efficient to pay for a bus to take a team to an away game and have an injury leave the team with too few players. Specifically he said the district needs to look at whether a team needs a minimum number of active players signed up for a season.
However, Phillips added that there are some sports where there are many students on the modified, JV and varsity teams. He explained this is when having all levels is needed.
In other business:
• The board heard a presentation by math teacher Christie Fedele about offering an ACE Statistics class next year. It would be for three college credits. She said it would replace Math 12 and it should be for juniors and seniors only. Fedele added the prerequisite should be passing Algebra II with an 80 or higher. She said she would offer after school help to any student who doesn’t meet that requirement. The board will vote on the class at the next meeting.
• Buildings and Grounds Superintendent Mike DeNardo said the district is meeting engineers to create a rough plan and cost for closing the middle school and merging it with the main campus. He said he should have something in a month or two.
The next school board meeting is Monday, June 6, starting at approximately 6:30 p.m.
