Yates drunk driving arrests are highest ever

YATES COUNTY—Driving While Intoxicated crimes in 2009 were the highest Yates County has ever experienced.
Sheriff Ron Spike said in 2009, there were 122 arrests by all law enforcement agencies.  He said in 2008, there were 84 such arrests.
“DWIs went up the highest it’s ever been,” said Spike.  He explained a majority of DWIs are found on patrol or from complaints.  Spike added, only two of those were found at checkpoints.
Meanwhile, over all violent crimes are only up 4.7 percent, from 2008 to 2009.  Spike said in 2009, there were 689 crimes, and only 658 in 2008.
One area the sheriff’s department is seeing an increase is in Internet and electronic crime.  Spike said this includes fraud, identify theft, “sexting”, etc.  He explained officers are getting training on how to handle these crimes, and how to keep up with forensics needed to handle electronic crimes.
“We have to be able to deal with electronic evidence,” he said.
Possession of drugs is one area crime went down.  Spike reported that last year the sheriff’s department made 36 arrests, and in 2008 made 45 arrests.
Burglaries were up slightly.  Spike said in 2009, the sheriff’s office made 59 arrests.  In 2008, they made 55 arrests.  Larcenies were also up.  In 2009, there were 128 arrests, and 96 in 2008.
