Yates occupancy taxes up 72 percent for first quarter

PENN YAN—Yates County legislature chairman Robert Multer had some good news about tax collections for legislators at their April 13 meeting. Multer said the quarterly sales tax report for the first quarter of 2009 was up five percent and the occupancy tax was up 72 percent. He commented, “This indicates things are not looking too bad.”
Following the meeting, county treasurer Bonnie Percy spoke about the dollar figures, noting January 2008 started at a negative 11 percent. She said sales tax collections in the first quarter last year were $1,868,195 and this year during the same period; $1,954,852. The occupancy tax, which went into effect in January 2008 had first quarter collections last year of $9,971 and $17,190 the first quarter this year. Percy said there was no collection in December before the tax went into effect, which impacted the collection figures somewhat.
Percy had some information about Schuyler County as well. The first quarter 2009 had an increase of 10 percent in sales tax and the occupancy tax rose by 30 percent.  Ontario County on the other hand saw a decrease of four percent in sales tax in the first quarter this year.
