Contestants vie for Miss Penn Yan title

PENN YAN--Each year during the holiday celebration in Penn Yan, the crowning of Miss Penn Yan for the upcoming year is always a highlight of StarShine. While events in the village begin at 5 p.m. the crowning ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m.
The contestants prepared essays about what they would do if they were in charge of Penn Yan for a day. The profiles are listed below:
Logan Broome is a sophomore at Penn Yan Academy and is the daughter of Shawn Broome and Kelly Logan. She is sponsored by the Penn Yan Volunteer Fire Department. Her activities include National Junior Honors Society, Leo Club, Varsity Club, varsity soccer and lacrosse and JV basketball. She has been on honor roll since 2013 and received two excellence awards for French. Along with being a banner holder for the PYFD, she has participated in the Day of Service at Keuka College for the past two years. She currently works at the Wagner Restaurant and previously was employed at Rainbow Junction.
If Broome was in charge of Penn Yan for one day, she would organize a summer camp program for children of any age who are affected by addiction. Campers would come together for fun activities such as swimming, canoeing, sports and art and crafts. While participating in the activities campers would be able to draw support from one another, talk freely about their experiences and learn that they are not alone.
Jenna Compton is a junior at Penn Yan Academy and is the daughter of Sherrie Dixon. She is sponsored by the Penn Yan Rotary Club. Compton has participated in JV softball and performed in the 2017 PYA drama production of "Big Fish." She is a member of the Blue Notes, Natural Helpers, was a 2017 homecoming princess and currently works at Lloyd's Limited.
If Compton was in charge of Penn Yan for one day she would help feed the hungry. She knows how hard families work to keep food on the table and would love to make sure that people in our community are fed and happy.
Jennalyn Conley is a junior at Penn Yan Academy and is the daughter of Lisa and Jeff Conley. She is sponsored by Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital. She has participated in Half Day Happenings, 4-H, Drama Club, Big Brother--Big Sister, National Junior Honor Society, Rotary Club and Yearbook Club. She is a Sunday school teacher at the Penn Yan United Methodist Church, volunteers at the Dairy Bar at the Yates County Fair and is on the Junior Ambulance Corps. She is employed at the Penn Yan Diner and Eastview Vet Clinic.
If Conley was in charge of Penn Yan for one day she would take time to clean up the community, and bring everyone together to pick up trash and repaint buildings. She would also like to plant trees and flowers to brighten up the community. By bringing the community together we could further help each other out to make the community a better place.
Madison Flynn is a sophomore at Penn Yan Academy and is the daughter of Jack and Jennifer Flynn. She is sponsored by the Catholic Daughters of America. She has participated in varsity cheerleading in the fall, Penn Yan Academy drama club, PYA concert choir and various Penn Yan Theatre company (PYTCO) productions. She is also involved in the Backpack Program, National Junior Honor Society and is an altar server for St. Michael's Church. Her sports include JV soccer, manager for JV girls' basketball and previously was in modified soccer and softball. She is employed at Mac's Dairy Bar.
If Flynn was in charge of Penn Yan for one day, she would organize events at the new Community Center that would bring community members of all ages together. These events would spread positivity within the community and would create a place for families to create memories, strengthen friendships and form new friendships.
Alycia Moravec is a junior at Penn Yan Academy and is the daughter of Richard and Judith Moravec. She is sponsored by PYTCO. She has participated in lacrosse and soccer, PYA Art Club, International Club and is a member of Science Olympians. During the summer she works as a counselor in the Summer Drama Program. She is employed at Lake Street Plaza Movie Theater and Longs' Cards and Books.
If Moravec was in charge of Penn Yan for one day she would work to organize volunteers to help pick up trash and clean up yards and buildings in the town. She would work to improve the atmosphere within the community.
Maci Nicholson is a junior at Penn Yan Academy and is the daughter of Joel and Kristina Nicholson. She is sponsored by the Penn Yan Future Farmers of America. Her activities include FFA, concert and jazz bands, independent choir, Varsity Club and outdoor adventure club. She has participated in cross country, track and field and volunteered for the Academy Club, blood drive and vacation Bible school. She is employed at the Keuka Restaurant.
If Nicholson was in charge of Penn Yan for one day, she would like to make the community more aware of the growing drug problem and help the people who are addicted. She would have different workshops for people who want to help their loved ones, but do not know how. To help people who are addicted, Nicholson would like to have support groups where they could talk about their addiction and open up a rehabilitation center to overcome their drug abuse.
Rielly Stewart is a junior at Penn Yan Academy and is the daughter of Jeffery and Dannette Stewart. She is sponsored by the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association. Stewart has participated in biomedical club, drama club, JV soccer and lacrosse and varsity bowling. She has volunteered at Rainbow Junction and is currently starting an environment club to protect parks and prevent pollution to our lakes.
If Stewart was in charge of Penn Yan for one day she would pay attention to the environment of our town. She would put more focus on the pollution of our lakes and protect our parks. She would also use funding to utilize recycling bins around town.
Alexia Strong is a sophomore at Penn Yan Academy and is the daughter of Lyn and Jarrod Strong. She is sponsored by the Arc of Yates County. She has participated as a camp counselor for PYTCO youth summer camp, all PYTCO events, school musicals, select choir and volunteering in Celebrate Service Celebrate Yates and service day for the National Junior Honor Society. Her sports include JV soccer and lacrosse in ninth grade and varsity soccer and lacrosse in 10th grade.
If Strong was in charge of Penn Yan for one day she would create more opportunities for community events. She believes Penn Yan needs more opportunities to bring the people together by involving the youth of Penn Yan, empowering one another to build a stronger community.
Rachel Wheeler is a sophomore at Penn Yan Academy and is the daughter of Tammy Moore and Ralph Wheeler. She is sponsored by Penn Yan Lions Club. Rachel's activities include JV basketball, varsity soccer and lacrosse, Leo Club, Art Club, Future Business Leaders of America, National Junior Honor Society and Varsity Club. She has participated in Journey for Sight, Day of Service, Celebrate Service Celebrate Yates and various PYTCO activities.
If Wheeler was in charge of Penn Yan for one day she would set up a program for teenagers and young adults to learn how to be an adult. The program would teach them how to pay taxes, manage their money and time. Along with how to take care of themselves and their possessions. This would allow them to be more comfortable and less anxious with the transition into adulthood.
