WATKINS GLEN--The rock band Phish is headed back to Watkins Glen. Watkins Glen International has announced the rock group will return for a three-day music festival titled "Magnaball" this summer. The festival will run from Aug. 21-23. In the summer of 2011, Phish also played at WGI.
"We're proud to welcome Phish and their fans back to The Glen," said Watkins Glen International President Michael Printup. "2011 opened a lot of eyes to what a positive influence a rock festival can have on our community. We can't wait to show off Upstate New York and Watkins Glen International to a new group of fans."
County officials have previously mentioned the positive impact the 2011 Phish concert had on the area, which brought in $500,000 to the county's sales tax revenues. The Schuyler County Legislature passed a resolution in December to approve an amended agreement with WGI for law enforcement services during their events. This agreement allows the racetrack to reduce the amount they pay the county for police services by half if a new event sees a paid attendance of greater than 20,000 people, increasing incrementally to a 100 percent credit if attendance is greater than 30,000.
"This is great news for Schuyler County and our entire region," said Schuyler County Administrator Tim O'Hearn. "Beyond the significant economic impact this event represents it also provides the opportunity to welcome back Phish and their fans to our community."
Magnaball marks the first major concert at Watkins Glen International since Phish's 2011 festival, Super Ball IX. Tickets for Magnaball went on sale Friday, March 20.
