WATKINS GLEN--The road and sidewalk construction project work resumes in Watkins Glen this week.
Annette M. Burdett, public information officer for the state's Department of Transportation, said work is expected to resume with the sidewalks on the east side of Route 14, which will then continue to the west side of Route 14. Sidewalk and brick paver work will then continue just north of Division Street and south to Route 414. Lighting foundations and underground conduit will be installed. Also this fall, new median islands will be built between the northern gateway entrance to the village on Route 14A at Gabriel's Junction and a foundation will be built south of Cross Street for a new gateway welcome sign.
Burdett said weather permitting, the sidewalks and paver work will be completed by December. Traffic and pedestrian signals are also expected to be completed by the end of this year.
Then next year, Route 14 will be paved from Fairgrounds Lane to the harbor area. Prep work and milling will occur mid- to end of April. Dependent on weather and contractor scheduling, top course paving will occur approximately mid-May.
Burdett said village streets will be closed for only short durations to accommodate the milling and paving of the intersections with Route 14.
