School recognizes winter sports achievements

WATKINS GLEN--The Watkins Glen Board of Education held its regularly scheduled meeting Monday, March 20 with 45 members of the public attending.
The meeting began with Superintendent Tom Phillips acknowledging the winter sport teams and their successful seasons. Jacob Carocci and Patrick Hazlitt, members of the indoor track team, were recognized for their accomplishments as Section IV Class C champions in the high jump and 1600 meter run consecutively, also breaking school records in many events. Aidan DeBolt with the Boys Swim Team for winning Section IV Class C in the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Kameryn Sheldon with the wrestling team won Section IV Class C in the 220 pound weight class. The following varsity girls basketball team members were recognized for their accomplishment as the NYSPHSAA Girls Basketball Class C Champion for 2017; Ryanna LaMoreaux, Hannah Morse, Makenna Fraboni, Clara Chedzoy, Amanda Pike, Katlyn Kernan, Emilia Bond, Taylor Kelly, Mariah Gonzalez, Julia Reilly, Mikenna Ayers, Kendra Larson and Jazmin Shea. Phillips thanked the Booster Club for all their work behind the scene with the celebration of the girls' varsity basketball title.
In other regular business, the board approved the election officials for the capital project vote, accepted the resignations of cafeteria cook Sharon Laughlin and modified football coach Jack McCauley and approved a health and welfare contract for Watkins Glen resident students attending non public school in the Elmira city school district.
Marie Keefer reminded the board that the budget vote for the capital project takes place Tuesday, March 28 from 12 to 8 p.m. The meeting was adjourned but followed by a 90-minute instructional budget presentation. Residents go to the polls to vote on the $12.6 million capital project March 28. They vote once again May 16 for the regular school budget.
The proposed regular budget currently has a 2.49 percent increase of $660K but cannot be finalized until the district receives state aid figures. Gayle Sedlack explained each teacher builds their budget and then confers with the principal if adjustments are needed. The financial committee final budget review is scheduled for Wednesday, March 29 at 5:45 p.m.
