States receive jail time for stolen funds

SCHUYLER COUNTY—Former Monterey Fire Chief Larry States, 41, and his wife Kimberly States, 46, were both sentenced to jail terms Thursday, Jan. 30 in Schuyler County court. Larry States was sentenced to one and one-third to four years in state prison for his crime, which had the potential for a maximum of seven years incarceration. Kimberly States was sentenced to one year of incarceration.
Larry States pled guilty in November, 2013, to grand larceny in the third degree, a class D felony, for stealing more than $100,000 from the Monterey Volunteer Fire Company during a five-year period. Kimberly States also pled guilty to stealing from the fire company while serving as treasurer of the organization. The couple was also ordered to make restitution in the amount of $115,000. The charges came about after an investigation by the New York State Comptroller’s Office and the New York State Police.
“It is always disturbing when a public official abuses his or her position for personal benefit, but it is particularly egregious when the fraud is committed by a member of law enforcement,” Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli said.
