Village names Mosher new police sergeant in charge

WATKINS GLEN--The Watkins Glen board of trustees voted to name interim Sergeant in Charge Ethan Mosher to the position full time during the Tuesday, Oct. 20 board meeting. The board also voted to name Mosher to the permanent rank of sergeant.
Mosher replaces former interim Sergeant in Charge Brandon Mathews, who put on administrative leave in August.
The board decided to allow Halloween trick or treating during the hours of 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. on Oct. 31.
"There isn't a law against it... It is a personal choice, if someone doesn't want to let their kids go out (they won't)," said Mayor Luke Leszyk.
Leszyk said the village is providing guidance, asking that people wear masks and practice social distancing.
The board did not vote on the matter.
"All social distancing should be adhered to... kids are going to school and they are already around each other," Leszyk said.
The board also decided to reopen the portion of Third Street that was closed for the summer to create an outdoor patio section for visitors to eat outside.
When asked how the outdoor patio did, Leszyk said, "Overall, it went well... but there is room for improvement."
Leszyk said adding a canopy to allow people to eat outside in hot weather would be an important addition and specifically mentioned a similar project instituted this summer in Hammondsport as a source of inspiration.
