Watkins presents 'Into the Woods'

WATKINS GLEN-The Watkins Glen High School Class of 2017 will present the dramatic musical, "Into the Woods," this weekend in the high school auditorium. The production will include over 20 students from grades seven through 12.
The story revolves around a Baker and his wife who wish to have a family but are prevented by a witch's curse. The witch tells them they need to bring her a white cow, a red cape, yellow hair and a gold slipper in order to break it. The Baker and his wife set out "into the woods" to find these things. They encounter many obstacles on their quest including characters from familiar fairy tales: "Rapunzel," "Little Red Riding Hood," "Jack and the Beanstalk," "Cinderella" and others.
The story is based on a book by James Lapine with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
Memorable songs include "Children Will Listen," "Agony," "Giants in the Sky," "No More," "No One is Alone," and the title song, "Into the Woods."
The musical debuted in San Diego in 1986 and on Broadway in 1987 where it won Tony Awards for best score, best book and best actress in a musical. A Disney film adaptation was released in 2014.
Directors are Michelle and Tim Benjamin of Montour Falls. The Baker and Baker's Wife are played by William Yeater and Alexis Atchie. Jack is played by Dakota Cole and Little Red Riding Hood by Maria Brubaker. Cinderella is played by Grace Wickham and the Witch by Phebe Wickham. Wrett Brower plays the Giant. H. Nathaniel Rose is the Narrator.
The show will run Friday March 31 and Saturday April 1 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday April 2 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the door, $10 for adults $8 for senior citizens and students. For more, call 607-535-8950.
