Watkins Glen approves downtown projects

WATKINS GLEN--At the Watkins Glen village board meeting Tuesday, March 7, trustees passed several resolutions and entertained a request from a new business.
Trustees authorized the awards for two additional DRI projects: Lafayette Park improvements and gateway signage. Economy Paving Company was the low bidder and was awarded the work for the two approved projects. LaBella Associates will provide construction support and inspection.
The gateway project calls for new signage at the north, south, and east entrances to the village. In addition, the sign at the intersection of Franklin Street and Route 414S will be painted.
The Lafayette Park project includes the construction of a restroom and upgrades to the bandstand and playground. The original project scope for Lafayette Park included upgraded lighting. This component has been separated and may be rebid.
In other news, trustees confirmed that animal control within village borders will be handled by Schuyler County, effective March 1.
Business owners, Katrina Gonsorick and Joe Irwin, along with Caitlin Cheney, from the Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce, presented trustees with information about the new Lakeside Trolley.
The service will provide "hop on and hop off" transportation. Stops along the routes, which will follow the east and west side of Seneca Lake, will include hand-picked destinations such as local parks, shopping, restaurants, wineries, breweries, campgrounds, RV parks, and lodging. The business owners requested that a pull-off space - approximately 50 feet - next to the Chamber on Third Street be permanently reserved for this business as one of the stops. Presenters indicated that this location would allow tourists to load and unload with easy and safe access to the Chamber of Commerce and is within walking distance of the Watkins Glen State Park. Trustees are considering the request.
