PENN YAN--With less than a week before the final edition of the Chronicle-Express was set to publish, it was announced Friday, Sept. 9 the New Jersey company CherryRoad Media had bought the property and several others in Massachusetts.
Those papers will join three recent acquisitions in Michigan, as well as over 60 newspapers in 10 states that the company began acquiring in 2020.
Gannett Co. had announced with a front-page story in the Chronicle-Express that the nearly 200-year-old newspaper would cease publication with the Sept. 14 issue.
An online story posted to the newspaper's website on Friday said with the recent acquisition of the paper, CherryRoad Media would continue the print and online editions. Current Staff Writer John Christensen will run the editorial operations going forward, according to the story.
CherryRoad Media, a subsidiary of CherryRoad Technologies, "is focused on using technology to strengthen communities through their local newspapers," according to their mission statement. "We believe the newspaper is an essential resource for developing strong communities. By using technology, we can supplement the printed newspaper with enhanced digital capabilities."
The story adds that customers will continue to be served at the Main Street office in Penn Yan.
