FINGER LAKES--On Nov. 16 and 17, communities in the Finger Lakes region came together to celebrate FLXGives, a day dedicated to philanthropy, generosity, and community impact. The initiative was organized by the Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes, Inc., and included an event to mark the end of the effort.
More than 100 non-profit organizations from Yates, Schuyler, Chemung, and Steuben Counties participated this year. The online platform allowed people to search for an organization, issue, or cause they wanted to support. Prizes were given throughout the 24 hours, including additional dollars for organizations, which were randomly selected based on the time of donation, the number of donors, or even social media posts. According to Katie Strickler, Scholarships and Youth Philanthropy Program Coordinator at Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes, Inc., FLXGives is not just a day of fundraising; it’s also a celebration of community spirit and collective goodwill.
Residents, businesses, and non-profit organizations come together to support a wide range of causes. This diversity reflects the Finger Lakes community’s wide range of needs and interests. FLXGives allows people to support causes close to their hearts, fostering a sense of personal connection and investment in the community.
FLXGives spotlights local non-profits, allowing them to showcase their missions and community impact. These organizations use the event to engage with the public, raise awareness about their work, and secure vital funding to continue their efforts.
Causes include education, healthcare, environmental conservation, arts and culture, and more.
FLXGives uses technology to facilitate donations. The online platform makes it easy for people to contribute to their chosen causes, making the giving process accessible and efficient. Social media also plays a significant role in amplifying the impact of FLXGives. People share their contributions on social media, encouraging others to join the movement.
For example, the recent contributions show an online leaderboard with the My Place, A Play and Learning Center in Schuyler County in third place overall with $10,469.99 from 104 donors. Over 100 organizations are on the donation list.
Local businesses play a crucial role in the success of FLXGives. They sponsor the event, match donations, or contribute incentives to encourage participation.
Participants were able to track the progress of fundraising efforts in real-time. This transparency fosters competition between causes and allows the community to witness the impact of their contributions.
